Spring Camp

Day 2 (Saturday)

Day 2 was dominated by the hikes. Both Cubs and Scouts went on walks in the countryside; the cubs had a shorter walk of a few miles with lots of adult accompaniment, while the Scouts went on an eight mile hike accompanied by an Explorer Scout.

However, the Scouts became rather lots in the first two miles or so, so a leader joined them to help with navigation and keep the pace up for the rest of it, to try and ensure they got back by nightfall. The leader (myself…) managed to get slightly lost again, but due to having kept in the correct direction by compass soon found the way to the destination with only a slight further detour, after which they made good time back to base, despite one of the Scouts becoming covered head to toe in mud after an incident with a slippery muddy slope!

When the Cubs returned from their shorter walk they were taught about astronomy by our guest speaker, a physics teacher, who had them making human models of the Solar System and constructing their own planispheres.

The Scouts returned and had their dinner, then the two groups came together for a campfire (with toasted marshmallows!) before bed.
